licensing btnI've noted some confusion lately about licensing and royalties. I think the Samuel French site explains it very well on their FAQ page. Scroll down to the bit about "Obtaining Permission."

Note -- "Our definition of a performance requiring legal authorization and payment of author royalties (licensing fees) is any performance in front of an audience: regardless of whether or not admission is charged; whether the performance is public or private; whether or not it is for charity or gain."

I also adhere to this policy. Recently someone asked me about "Fair Use." That is something different and is not applicable here. Here is an article about Fair Use. This has to do with parody, satire, criticism, or ... as in the case of a school paper, quoting a small portion of a bigger work and footnoting.

For One-Acts and Skits:
$30.00 for each performance. If you did 3 performances, the royalty fee would be $90.00.

Multiple One-Act Special:
Perform any 3 or more of my one-acts connected together to make a show and pay a special price of $75.00.

For Full-Lengths:

Negotiable depending on whether an amateur or professional production.

$75 Minimum.

SCALE 1 - AMATUER PRODUCTIONS
99 SEAT THEATRE OR LESS, HIGH SCHOOL THEATRE, COLLEGE THEATRE, COMMUNITY THEATRE, SHOWCASES, ETC.

Amatuer productions (where most of cast, crew, staff is not paid) will be $75 a production. If there is music involved there may be an additional cost per performance.

SCALE 2
PROFESSIONAL THEATRE, LARGE STAGE, CAPACITY GREATER THAN 99 SEAT THEATRE

Professional productions (where most of the cast, crew and staff are paid) will be more per performance and may require 10% of the total box office. If there is music involved there may be an additional cost per performance.

When applying for rights, please indicate the ticket prices and the house size.

For Children's Plays:
$45.00 for each performance.
For example, if you did 4 performances, the royalty fee would be $220.00.

Ordering Reading Copies:
I can send a pdf file for free, and you can make the copies.
Or if you require me to send you printed copies, it's $10 a copy for full-length plays and $4 a copy for one-acts or 10-minute plays including shipping.
Short Screenplays and Full Length Screenplays:
Licensing, option, and/or purchase price is all negotiable.
